The Beatles are among the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands in the history of popular music. Their innovative music and cultural impact helped define the 1960s. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked them #1 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
The Beatles led the mid-1960s musical 'British Invasion' into the United States, and became the highest grossing concert act of the 1960s. Although their initial musical style was rooted in 1950s rock and roll and homegrown skiffle, the group explored genres ranging from Tin Pan Alley to psychedelic rock. Their clothes, styles, and statements made them trend-setters, while their growing social awareness saw their influence extend into the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s. Their musical legacy remains unparalleled to this day. Aside from two concerts played in February along with the Ed Sullivan appearances, this was the first US tour by the Fab Four. They made their initial stateside Feb. appearances and then shot back to the UK and a whirlwind 'World Tour' before returning to the US in August for their first American tour, cramming 26 dates into August and September. A crazy time for the boys; amazing that they were able to continue to write and record as well as film their movies with such a hectic schedule. A testament to their perseverance and incredible creative genius.
